Hello and welcome for the second day's play in the opening Test match of the two-match series between South Africa and India. The SuperSport Park Centurion is getting ready after a rain-hit first day. A riveting day of cricket was spoiled by rain in the end as the opening day of this Boxing Day Test ended South Africa taking an early advantage Lokesh Rahul fighting the battle hard for Team India. An early stumps due heavy rainfall in the final session of play.
South Africa won the toss and opted to bowl given the weather around and made full use of the conditions by reducing India to 24/3 in no time. Things could have been even worse the visitors had South African fielders held onto catches of Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli early on in their innings. Kohli Iyer added a crucial 50+ partnership saw India through. Rahul is batting at 70 off 105 balls and Siraj is yet to get off the mark batting out ten deliveries.
Kagiso Rabada came out breathing fire after lunch and hunted in pairs to break the backbone of India. Shardul Rahul took the body blows and showed some fight with grit but Rabada came back and got rid of the former put India in deep trouble. KG was simply magnificent and broke a few records with his 14th Test five-for. Rahul was patient and scored an excellent half-century and had Mohammed Siraj with him when the umpires were forced to call.
India are at 208/8 in 59 overs will resume from there if the weather permits. A total of 98 overs are scheduled to be bowled for the rest of the days to make up for the lost time and overs. Can South Africa clean up India early in the first session. After a day of sensational seam bowling and some diligent stroke making from KL Rahul we will soon be ready to resume play with India at 208/8. It is a cloudy morning at Centurion one that could be interrupted by rain.
However for now we seem to be ready to start on schedule. India were rocked back early yesterday with debutant Nandre Burger picking two early wickets to leave the visitors at 24/3. There was a fightback from Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli but KG Rabada returned post Lunch to skittle out four wickets for next to no runs. KL Rahul has batted prolifically shepherding the tail to keep India in an even contest at the moment.
With the overhead conditions grassy deck and natural seam movement on offer it isn’t going to get any easier for the batters but we can saddle on for another exciting day of Test cricket. India on the other hand would have wanted to play out Day 1 rather than walk back just when KL Rahul was at his best. The Indian wicket-keeper is unbeaten on 70 vital runs and just has a couple of batters remaining to aid him and he will look to pick up some more runs early on Day 2.
Apart from Rahul though there were a few more gritty innings that didn't end up being big knocks but Virat Kohli Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur made handy runs. Anything around the 250-run mark and the visitors will be delighted with the bowling attack they have. South Africa on the other end will be mighty pleased with their bowling performance that made India work hard for every run. Kagiso Rabada to resume the day from the other end.
The consistency with lines and lengths proved pivotal in dismantling the strong Indian batting line-up.
