In 1699, pirate William Kidd tricks the king into commissioning him to escort a treasure ship. He recruits a crew of pardoned pirates, including the mysterious Adam Mercy. As treachery unfolds, secrets are revealed, leading to a confrontation between Kidd and those he betrayed.

The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score by Werner Janssen. The film was one of Joseph Stalin’s favorite films, according to Nikita Khrushchev’s memoirs. Stalin reportedly identified with Kidd’s mischievous nature. Charles Laughton reprised his role as Captain Kidd in Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd (1952), a comedy spoof of the original film. The film is loosely based on the real-life pirate William Kidd, who was executed in 1701 for piracy and murder. However, the film takes many liberties with historical facts and portrays Kidd as a more villainous character than he may have been. The film was directed by Rowland V. Lee, who also directed Son of Frankenstein (1939) and The Tower of London (1939), both starring Boris Karloff.
