I don’t buy fresh herbs often but when I do, the amount that I use is usually just a tiny fraction of what comes in the pre-packed herbs that I get from the supermarket. This is especially true for herbs like parsley, coriander and basil. A few days after buying them, the herbs start to wilt and brown, even if I stored them in the refrigerator.

I used to see my sister-in-law, who attended culinary school, wrap her herbs in paper towels before storing them in the refrigerator. I later found out that the way you store fresh herbs is critical to their longevity. I would like to show you what for me, is the best way to store fresh herbs. Your herbs will last longer than one week, and possibly, even two weeks.

► How to Store Fresh Parsley and Other Herbs

What You’ll Need:
A bunch of parsley or other herbs
Paper towel, 1-2 sheets
1 large plastic or zipper storage bag

Directions:
Take your newly purchased fresh parsley and place them on a cutting board. Remove the rubber band or the twist tie that binds the stems together. Cut the end of the stems, about 1 inch.
Rinse the parsley really well under cool running water. Use a paper towel to dry the parsley. Do not discard this damp paper towel. If it’s not damp enough, place the paper towel under cool running water. Squeeze any excess water from the paper towel.
Wrap the base of the parsley stems using the damp paper towel (like a bouquet of flowers). Place the wrapped parsley inside a large plastic or zipper storage bag. Partially close the bag and store in the refrigerator.

► Tips

You may need to rewet the paper towel every 3-5 days.
