Aromatic 8. What are chromophores?

This video explains what chromophores are and why they appear coloured. It also looks at their use as dyes and indicators. I look at the formation of azo dyes from the reaction of benzene diazonium chloride and phenol for example. I then consider the extended delocalised pi electron structures in the azo dyes, explaining how they appear coloured when the absorb particular wavelengths of light.
