[Knee Rehab Advice]

As a physical therapy student, I was very skeptical of learning and using manual muscle tests (MMT) and I still am to this day as a practicing PT. As a profession that harps on being objective with our examinations, it is imperative we do our best to get hard numbers with our testing rather than going off of ‘feel’, which we know can be influenced by our bias.

However, we are all guilty of using MMTs in our practice at least once, but I want to remind everyone what MMTs can actually tell us. MMTs DO NOT tell us how strong someone is, they can only reveal a weak muscle. With strength being so important and something everyone wants to talk about on social media, wouldn’t it make sense that we are measuring this in a legit way?

Measuring quad strength is something that should always be done objectively, especially with ACLr patients. I have tried convincing myself when measuring with my own hands that someone felt strong side-to-side, but when I test it objectively the difference really shows.

I am fortunate to have a @tindequipment that can measure strength objectively. Demonstrated in this video is peak load quad strength at 90 degrees of knee flexion. On the right you can see the real-time feedback that occurs with the testing.

‼️FYI on the right is a screen capture of me doing testing with an ACL patient, not my actual quad strength testing‼️
