In the 1980’s US Olympian David Volz, Dean Starkey and others would hold or reset the crossbar when knocked to ensure it remained in place on a pole vault attempt.

The technique of “steadying the bar” was later referred to as “Volzing” after its namesake Dave Volz.

Track and Field’s governing bodies eventually banned this technique.
