A zoo in Cincinnati is receiving backlash over the shooting death of a silverback gorilla.

The gorilla was shot by zoo officials, after a three-year-old fell into the enclosure. Hannah Mackenzie reports the gorilla has ties to the Rio Grande Valley.

Harambe was a 17-year-old western lowland silverback gorilla, tipping the scales at more than 400 pounds, and he was born right here, at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville.

Harambe was killed a day after his 17th birthday.

Jerry stones raised the gorilla from birth, and cared for him at the Gladys Porter Zoo, until last year, when Harambe was sent to the Cincinnati Zoo through a breeding program.

"He always had a little bit of flair about him... He was not mean; he was a gentle little guy,” says Jerry Stones. “He grew up to be a beautiful, beautiful animal, but he was not mean, never aggressive."

Harambe was shot Saturday by Cincinnati Zoo officials after a three year old child fell into the gorilla exhibit.

The terrifying moment now trending internationally, after a zoo visitor captured the incident in this cell phone footage.

That mother and father had to be petrified. They had to be scared to death... This beast had this baby... The zoo people had to make a decision, that God almighty... How do you win? How do you win?

The Gladys Porter Zoo has set up a memorial fund--to preserve Harambe’s memory--and make sure his family line is continued and cared for. For more information, and to donate, visit www.gpz.org Cincinnati Zoo
