Ordovician Mass Extinction- Causes & Consequences | GEO GIRL

The Late Ordovician Mass Extinction Event was caused by many factors that came together to create drastic climate change. However, this climate changes was not unidirectional. There were two pulses of climate changes which led to two pulses of extinctions. The first pulse was a cooling event driven by the spread of non-vascular plants over land, which increased continental weathering and thus, carbon burial, which cools Earth. After non-vascular plants exhausted their nutrient supply and stopped spreading, weathering slowed, and the second pulse of climate change and extinctions began. The second pulse was a warming event that then caused ocean anoxia (oxygen depletion in the oceans) which led to more extinctions.
