Electron Geometry for CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)

In this video we look at the electron geometry for CO2 (Carbon Dioxide). Because the Carbon dioxide molecule has two electron domains (two oxygen atoms and no lone pairs) the electron geometry will be linear.

When we determine the electron geometry for molecules like CO2, we count the electron domains.  This includes lone pairs and atoms bound to the central atom.  Some common electron geometries are below:

6                                  0                      Octahedral

Note that the column “Bonded Atoms” is the number of atoms bonded to the central atom.  For CO2 we have two oxygen atoms bonded to the central C atom.  We have no lone pairs.  Therefore the electron geometry for CO2 is linear The molecular geometry would also be LInear.
