Sniper rifles, pistols and machine
Sniper rifles, pistols and machine guns might be great for headshots, executions and mowing down groups. But the shotgun will leave your enemies peeling their friends off the walls for weeks. And that's why they're so brilliant! So let's lock, load and blast our way through our top five shotguns in gaming.
5. Gnasher - Gears of War series
Just as its name suggests, Gears of War's Gnasher is a chomping beast with a mouth full of shells. It's your own personal hellhound bound only by the fact that it's in your arms. At long-range it's useless, and at mid-range its bark is loud. But at close range you're getting mauled, son!
4. Custom Shotgun - Resident Evil 2
The humble handgun might be your best friend in Resident Evil 2, but the Custom Shotgun is your guardian angel. A very violent angel that obliterates zombies at the waist, sure. But you're hardly going to survive the outbreak with that piddly little steak knife, are you?
3. SPAS 12 - Grand Theft Auto series
As far as weapons go, GTA always struggled to boast one that could be considered iconic. Well, unless you count a giant purple dildo as a weapon. The SPAS 12 is the ultimate exception to this rule and undoubtedly GTA's stand-out firearm. If you ever fancied going all psycho on a roof, the SPAS 12 was always there to back you up.
2. M90 CAWS - Halo: Combat Evolved
Although it was a peashooter in the games that followed, Halo: Combat Evolved's shotgun was one for the ages. No need for shiny space-age technology when you have pure brunt and grunt. And plenty of dead Grunts too. Unless the enemies were running at you with a wrecking ball, they were positively screwed.
1. Super Shotgun - Doom II: Hell on Earth
A true classic never dies, but your enemies definitely do when they come face-to-face with it. Obliterating the big guys in no time at all was its job and it was always on top form. Doom II may be a primitive first-person shooter, but the immense shockwaves generated by this incredible weapon are still felt to this very day.
