Dusty shares his 5 long ride tips with you. Whether you're training for Ironman, Half Ironman, a bike race or just to be fit, these tips will help you.

1. Expect the unexpected- This applies more to race day, but you need to be ready much before race day. You need to have a plan in place in case you get a flat tire, drop your nutrition, have a seat post that slips, a dead bike computer, bad weather, and so on.

2. Invest in a good pair of cycling or bib shorts- Do Not cheap out when it comes to your cycling/bib shorts. Sitting on a bike saddle for hours on end isn't the most comfortable thing, so make sure you pick a good pair of shorts that fit well and are comfortable and well made.

3. Nutrition- After 1.5 - 2 hours, we can no longer rely on our glycogen stores for fuel. Bars, chews, gels, liquid calories are all options and you need to find out what works for you. I prefer F2C Nutrition's Glycodurance. I will actually make a super bottle consisting of 1000 calories and that will be all I need for about 3 hours of cycling. (see bottom of description for F2C discount)

4. Bike Fit- Make sure you have a comfortable bike fit. Getting as aero as possible is not the answer if it's a position you can't hold for the length of your ride.

5. Recovery / foam rolling- Of course doing those long epic rides are going to tighten up your muscles. Massage can work wonders, but you should be able to maintain your muscles by foam rolling 10-15 minutes every day or every other day.
