Electronegativity for general chemistry students
Electronegativity for general chemistry students is explained. Some atoms have a greater pull, or attraction, of electrons ins covalent bond than others. This "pull" is called electronegativity. When electrons in a covalent bond are pulled toward one atom, the bond is said to be polar covalent, the example of HF is shown here. This results in a dipole moment which is introduced here. When there are large differences in electronegativity, like in the case of metals and non-metals, the bond character is said to ionic.
