While there are a lot of possible causes for a persistent "blah" mood, dysthymia, a form of depression, is one possibility. It is also known as dysthymic disorder and more recently as persistent depressive disorder. In this video, I review how dysthymia differs from major depression ("regular depression"). I discuss how it is diagnosed. I also emphasize the importance of regular primary care visits to be sure that other potential causes of similar symptoms are not missed. Finally, I discuss treatment options including psychotherapy (aka counseling or talk therapy) and/or antidepressant medication.
