Tiruvannamalai, situated at the foot of Arunachala, 120 miles southwest of Chennai, an ancient village with a large and splendid temple. Annamalaiyar Temple is a Tamil Hindu temple dedicated to the Lord Shiva. During Karthigai (also known as Deepam), which usually falls in November a beacon light of clarified butter (ghee) is lit at nightfall on the summit of the mountain. It can be seen from miles around, and symbolizes the Shiva lingam of fire joining the sky.

Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi was drawn to Tiruvannamalai especially the hill called as Arunachala. Sri Ramana Maharshi stayed at various places in Tiruvannamalai and then in several caves on the Arunachala Hill  until he finally settled at what came to be called Sri Ramanasramam where he lived until his Mahanirvana in April 1950.

Walking around the Arunachala Hill is called Giri Pradakshina. Pradakshina means the act of walking around any holy place in a clockwise direction, with one’s right side facing the object of adoration. ‘Giri’ means hill; so giri pradakshina refers to walking around the Arunachala Hill. To go round this hill is good.As one continues to walk, the body automatically gets harmonized as in the Asana state. The body therefore becomes improved in health. Besides this, there are several varieties of medicinal herbs on the hill. The air that passes over those herbs is good for the lungs.
