The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, told the General Assembly, “Despite contributing less than 0.47 per cent of global emissions, Bangladesh is one of the most climatically-vulnerable countries in the world.”

Speaking today (22 Sep) during the High-level week, Hasina added, “The adverse effects of climate pose serious threats to the security and economic prosperity of our present and future generations. Urgent, bold and ambitious collective actions are needed to address these threats.

The head of government also noted her country’s commitment to global peace and security, saying it is “well manifested” in the contribution to UN peacekeeping operations.

“As of now 188,000 men and women from Bangladesh have served in 55 peacekeeping missions in 40 countries. Owing to our own experience, we are also actively contributing to the post-conflict reconstruction efforts through our leadership role in the UN Peacebuilding Commission,” Hasina said.

The Prime Minister also referred to the sixth anniversary of the “forcibly displacement of the Rohingyas from their country.”

She said, “Out of humanitarian concern, we have given temporary shelter. The displaced Rohingyas want to return to their own country and live a peaceful life there. Let’s ensure those destitute people can return to their home soon.”

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.

The UN has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world.

But one thing has stayed the same: it remains the one place on Earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity.
