Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia Hamza Abdi Barre called for reforms in multilateral institutions, reiterating that “these establishments and their current structures are no longer fit for purpose.”

Prime Minister Barre today (23 Sep) addressed the General Assembly’s annual general debate.

The Somalian diplomat underscored, “the noticeable increase in armed conflicts and military coups, especially in the African continent is a source of deep concern.”

He said, “these conflicts have a destructive impact on the lives of civilians, and lead to displacement and poverty at an expanded level.”

On combating terrorism, Prime Minister Barre said, “if we are determined, and if we cooperate effectively with our partners and local communities, we would not leave a single stone for the terrorists to crawl under.”

He called for the need to “establish a similar approach in dealing with terrorism worldwide,” reiterating that “we must guarantee the effective integration of local communities in a manner that protects their rights by offering justice and upholding the rule of law.”

On climate change, Prime Minister Barre said that his country has been the victim of “a vicious cycle of prolonged droughts and destructive floods that have killed thousands and displaced million.”

“It is a great injustice for Somalia which is the country that had the least to do with carbon emissions globally,” he underscored.

Prime Minister Barre said, “It's clear that it bears the brunt of the negative impacts of climate change.”

He called upon the international community to support Somalia in addressing this urgent issue, and in bolstering his country’s resilience in the face of climate change.

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.

The UN has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world.

But one thing has stayed the same: it remains the one place on Earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity.
