Cosmic Jailbreak is an 8K cartridge for the VIC-20. It was released in 1982. This game is based on the 1979 arcade game Cosmic Guerilla by Universal. This game was quite a popular port to early 80s home computers and this is one of many examples that made it into the home. This fixed shooter is an advance on the Space Invaders concept. This time the aliens move in from the sides of the screen and remove blocks from the jail that are holding three of their colleagues captive. If they can remove enough blocks, they can release one of the aliens and you lose a life. You also lose a life if your ship is shot. You have three bases to hide behind that give you cover for a while and reset to full with each new level. A UFO flies across the top of the screen occasionally and can be shot for extra points. There are also times when all the aliens but one stop moving - that one then moves much quicker than normal and will soon release one of the captives if you do not shoot it. The game features several changes as you move up the levels. From level 3, a Space Bug appears in the lower part of the playfield. This annoying creature blocks your shots and can shoot at you - and being so low it is difficult to dodge the shots. To kill it you have to shoot its extreme edges. From level 5, a new row of invaders appears low down, under the jail. These mainly serve to get in your way but can also shoot you. This game is fast paced enough and with a decent basic concept to still enjoy playing today. The graphics are quite simple and the playfield very basic, but the gameplay is still there, even after forty years. The game is not difficult initially, so you can rack up some decent playtime and scores. This run was played using the Pantheon emulator on PC. the date of play was the 13th August 2024. There are no level options and the final score reached was 6,720 points.
