Symbolic interactionism is a micro-sociological theory that focuses on how the social interactions between individuals are carried out using symbols. On the MCAT, it is most commonly associated with one of its founders, George Herbert Mead. Symbolic interactionism has three premises: first, human actions toward things depend on the meaning we’ve assigned to those things. Second, humans give meaning to things based on social interactions with others. Third, the meaning of things is not permanent and can be modified during social interactions with others.

Consider the situation where you attend a job interview and shake hands with the interviewer. You’re shaking hands with them because you believe it’s polite to do so, and the interviewer sees you shaking with them and notices your politeness. In this case, the two of you see the handshake as a symbol to communicate politeness and respect. However, symbolic interactionism doesn’t imply that you and the interviewer necessarily have to assign the same meaning to a symbol. For example, let’s alter the situation and say that your hands were extremely sweaty during the handshake. You might believe that you’re being polite by offering a handshake, but the interviewer might believe that extending a sweaty hand out to shake is a sign of disrespect and bad hygiene. The meaning of a symbol is in the eye of the beholder. Another interesting way to examine how meaning can change is to consider a handshake during the time of a widespread pandemic. During a pandemic, people want to prevent the spread of germs. Therefore, extending a handshake might suddenly be universally seen as a sign of negligence and thoughtlessness. This is yet another example of how the meaning of a symbol can be modified over time, depending on situational factors.
