In this lecture, I have discussed the epoxidation of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds using hydrogen peroxide and alkali. Actually, this reaction proceeds through the nucleophilic epoxidation on the electron-deficient alkene moiety of α,β-unsaturated carbonyls. I have also discussed the difficulty of the traditional epoxidation of processes using peroxy acids like m-CPBA and the side reaction associated with the scheme.
