In this video I develop a video out of a question which was asked by regular channel contributor Helder Gonzales.
Helder believes that by focussing on his hip muscles he has created an imbalance in his thigh muscles which is negatively now affecting his jumping.
I provide a number of explanations and advice on muscles - i.e. those which are important for sprinting (hip extensors and flexors - everything else being equal). The relationship between the muscles to the front and to the rear of the thigh is also considered (anterior/posterior).
And very specifically we take a look at hormonal response and weight training protocols. Different combinations of reps and sets and load lifted (and speed of lift) will create different hormonal responses.
For example, medium weight (as a percentage of 1RM) combined with medium rep ranges (8-10) weights of 75%-85% of 1RM will produce more growth hormone and testosterone compared to very heavy weights (90% 1RM) and low rep numbers (3 x 4 for example).
I then explain how what is important - and again everything else being equal - is the ability of a muscle to produce force very quickly (rate of force development).
This should be the objective of your training.
We also consider eccentric training and how it is less likely to create larger muscles.In passing I also consider a recent post by exercise scientist Chris Beardsley on the limitations of slow eccentric training for speed and power athletes.
There’s much information in this video which all relates to Helder’s question. Hopefully the information I’ve provided will also help you better understand how to train your muscles optimally to sprint and jump.
