Average Directional Index (ADX) indicator consists of 3 lines. ADX tells us about the trend and strength in that trend. Generally the #AverageDirectionalIndex (ADX) is calculated for 14-periods. ADX for different time-frames would be different. It is plotted as sub-graph below the price graph. When the ADX line is above 20 or 25, the market is said to have a trending phase but this doesn't say anything about the direction of the trend. ADX below the 20 mark indicates a low volatility. The direction of the trend is given by the +DI line and the -DI line.

When there is positive cross-over i.e the +DI line crossing the -DI line from below, the market tends to move higher whereas when there is a negative cross-over i.e. the -DI line crosses the +DI line from below, the market tends to move lower. If the ADX is above 20 level along with a positive cross-over, the bullish set-up is more reliable. Watch this video to learn about the ADX indicator.
