METAPHYSICAL MOVEMENT AND MUSIC

According to traditions and scriptures, music was bestowed on mankind from the divine source. According to scripture, the ancient Persian Achaemenian Empire was established by God and their founder Cyrus was positively mentioned several times in the Bible. The ancient Persians whose progenitor was Eran (Iran), the great grandson of the prophet Joseph who was the one blessed son of Israel, were convinced that correct music is and should remain celestial. Thus they endeavored to maintain the spiritual aspect of the original celestial music revealed to mankind by deity. The time-honored Persian modes or dastgah that have been passed down from the dawn of history were combined with the traditional poetry of later master wordsmiths and spiritual guides such as Molavi (Rumi), Ansari of Herat, Hafez, etc., for over a thousand years have been combined in the radif, also known as the collection of traditional modal systems. These modal systems are based on a variety of scales which are basically 7 notes and not encumbered by the restrictions of Western chromatics. In this video, that revered system of music and verse is further interpreted by patterned movement which can subtly indicate the meanings of the song texts. Pantomime of poetry through gesture and dance is nothing new as confirmed by a 1920s article in the Los Angeles Examiner picturing a USC ballerina with the caption “Maxine Adams University of Southern California dancing to poetry” “first in the world to develop this art.” This concept is added to the sacred nature of ancient celestial music which, until recently, was fostered by the late great master Dr. Daryush Safvat at his Center for Preservation and Propagation. Dr. Safvat’s work is continued by the Society for Preservation and Propagation of Eastern Arts in Salt Lake City who have produced this video and many similar posts. Dr. Safvat’s contention was that a musician must be striving to spiritually perfect themselves, to become a holy man if possible, before daring to attempt to attain the status of authentic master of any traditional art. That sacred role initially requires a serious spiritual ascent incorporating the sacred aspects of sincere Sufism. Sufism and Shia Islam have retained features and customs of the divinely established religion of the prophet Zoroaster. In this video the character of the different modal systems has been indicated including the potential colors that would best exemplify each mode. This video shares examples of music and motion from various Eastern traditions mainly Persian, Afghan and Turkic. Other than serious traditional instrumentalists, the performers on this video are mostly from a ballet or folkdance expertise which disciplines are best suited for correctly representing these traditional ethnic genres.
