Multi-instrmentalist, ethnomusicologist, Persian music scholar and Jazz historian Dr. Lloyd Miller discusses his 7 years as a Fulbright researcher on Persian and Afghan music. Author of the first full-length analysis of the theory and practice of Persian singing in his dissertation and book Music and Song in Persia, also in Afghan Music and Dance and a dozen other books. On his return to the US in 1977, he reports his experiences in this interview with one of his PhD committe members. Miller's often unbelievable experiences are more fully detailed in his book Sufi, Saint & Swinger available to read on his website jazzscope dot com. During his 7 years in Iran, Afghanistan and neighboring areas, he made many friends and played in tea houses, concert halls and on his own prime-time weekly one hour TV show on NIRT in Tehran. He was able to chat with people in Farsi, Dari, a little Pashtu, Urdu, Hindi, Turkish, Armenian, Kurdish, Arabic, and whatever other languages necessary. He has been considered a musical and linguistic genius but is also pretty much an idiot in most other things but doesn't seem to care. This is the full interview, a portion of which was posted years ago.
