The very sad story with the matches, story from the picture book "Der Struwwelpeter" by Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann published in 1845 and intended for children age 3 to 6.
Hoffmann wrote a couple of stories for his son as a christmas gift in 1844 and was persuaded by friends to publish them. The resulting book became a huge success, especially after he had published an edition with improved pictures.
From today's point of view, the cruel stories showing greatly exaggerated consequences of misbehavior are not very child-oriented, and an authoritarian style of education underlies the entire book. On the other hand, the topics are quite modern, displaying abnormal child behavior such as ADHD. This story is not only a warning for children to obey bans and not to play with fire, but also for the parents to keep the home childproof and not to leave their children unattended.
