So first of and most importantly, “The Mummy” is a reboot of “The Mummy franchise”, you know, the trilogy of movies starring Brendan Frasier and that lead to the Scorpion King Spin offs? Anyway, this Mummy film is set to differ from the classic trilogy as it will use a completely new mythology and will be set in the present day. So, what better way to reboot a film franchise, than with the 54 year old Tom Cruise playing the leading hero role. Sense the sarcasm. Yes that’s right, Tom Cruise will lead the cast, with Russell Crowe, being the most notable supporting actor. The movie is set to be directed by Alex Kurtzman, in his directorial debut. It’s hard to tell whether the film is in safe hands, as on one hand Kurtzman has produced successful movies like; Star Trek Into Darkness and the Amazing Spider Man 2, but on the other hand he produced and co-wrote movies like Cowboys & Aliens and even scarier, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. However, it should be noted that he co-wrote Mission: Impossible III, so one can assume that he will have a firm grasp on how to best utilise Tom Cruise.
Ok so importantly this movie will serve as the second instalment in what has been termed the “Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe”, which includes other films such as; Dracula Untold and is set to include the new Wolf Man movie released in 2018, as well as upcoming movies such as; Van Helsing, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Bride of Frankenstein and Invisible man. The mummy is being written by Jon Spaihts who also wrote Dracula untold and will be involved in writing other stories in this Cinematic Universe.
Now, pull out the calendar because the movie is set to be released on the 9th of June, 2017 and will be distributed by Universal pictures.
Looking now to the Synopsis of the film, as released by Universal Pictures. Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

And interestingly, Russell Crowe as Dr Henry Jekyll (personally, I’m most interested to see how Crowe tackles the Dr Jekyll character. It was reported that Tom Hardy, Javier Bardem, Jospeh Gordon Levitt and Eddie Redmayne were all considered to play Dr Jekyll, before Crowe landed the role).
Other cast members, without disclosed roles include;
Jake Johnson
Marwan Kenzari and
Courney B Vance
Now for all those interested in the production of the film, principal photography began on April 3rd, 2016 in Oxford, United Kingdom. The movie will also be filmed in Surrey.
