Ethanol has three chemically equivalent hydrogens:
The H that is attached to the oxygen has a surprisingly low ppm, but it is not split because it is 'insulated' but the electronegative oxygen atom.
The two H atoms on the carbon next to the oxygen are split THREE times due to the adjacent CH3 group. This makes them a quartet.
The three H atoms on the terminal carbon are split TWICE due to the adjacent CH2 group. This makes them a triplet.
