Here is the control and artificial power circuits of a starter using an autotransformer both open and closed transition. In the video, the difference of an open and close is shown. The open transition cuts the current flow for a split second at the middle of operation, while the close transition doesn't. Take note that there are tons of circuit for both open and closed transition so if you saw an unfamiliar one it does not mean that it is wrong. Different circuits has different use and effectivity depending on the situation.
Anyway, I use the lamps as a replacement for the resistors due to the fact that there is no resistor in Festo FluidSim (atleast in v3.6). The lamp just like a resistor also creates a drop as you can see in the circuit.
