Dental filling is the common term that primarily represents restoration. Once the tooth is excavated of the decayed part the cavity remains, which needs to be closed to prevent food lodgement, sensitivity etc. Various types of materials are available for this purpose. Most popular are the silver amalgams, glass ionomers and the resin composite filling. Most of the dentists would give you these options. Because amalgams contain the toxic substance mercury some people think that they are responsible for causing a number of diseases. However there is no solid scientific evidence to back up this clip. Glass ionomer cements or glass ionomer fillings are fluoride containing restorative materials that are primarily used to restore milk tooth as it has less strength, but adequate for chewing food by children. However it has an added advantage of sustained fluoride release. Resin composites on the other hand are presently the most popular due to its high aesthetics and superior strength. These are tooth coloured fillings. So most dentists are inclined to suggest you go for resin composite fillings as compared to the glass ionomers or the amalgam fillings.
