I am frequently asked by my patients, doctor which is a good brush, which is a good paste, how do I brush. Choose a brush that has a small head, with soft bristles. The small head can reach all corners of your mouth. The soft bristles help to remove all plaque and debris without damaging your tooth structure. Second the tooth paste. All pastes are good to go. Their primary function is to act as a detergent. Most pastes contain anti-cavity and anti-gingivitis ingredients such as fluoride, triclosan etc. Specially medicated tooth paste can be used for sensitive teeth but should be used after consultation with a dentist. Lastly the technique; most often the plaque and debris are present between you gum and teeth in a very small sulcus or pocket, therefore, the direction of your bristles should be 45 degrees to the long axis of your tooth with the bristles placed partly inside the sulcus. Three teeth are selected at a time. Back and forth motions accompanied by vertical strokes are performed. This is quite technique sensitive and cannot be performed by children and the elderly. Even adults require a lot of practice. If you find it very uncomfortable to follow this you can also change over to power driven tooth brushes or manual toothbrushing with circular motion can be performed.
