Find the area of a rectangle with mixed number fractions easily with the video lesson.

Before watching this video it would be beneficial to have a good understanding of what area means and how to measure the area of a rectangle before moving onto Mixed Number Fractions.

Let's remember that to find the area of a rectangle we multiply the length x the width. This is no different!

So let's begin...

First thing that we need to do is convert the mixed number fraction into an improper fraction. We can multiply the whole number by the denominator and then add the numerator. Or if this understanding is a little beyond your knowledge then we can create 'chocolate bars' and divide them into the denominator. Eg if we had 1 and 5/6 then we would cut the chocolate bar into 6 parts, then create a second chocolate bar and again cut into 6. Then we can simply colour and count the 6th that we have. In this case we have a whole chocolate bar - so 6. Then we have 5 6th in the second chocolate bar so thats 6 and 5 giving a total of 11. 11 6th

We would do this to both the length and the width. This would give us two improper fractions which we can then just simply multiply together. To multiply an improper fraction we can simply multiply the numerators and then multiply the denominators. Done!

But.. We were given the initial measurements in mixed number fractions so we then need to turn the answer back into a mixed number. How?

Well we can reverse the operation of turning the mixed number into an improper fraction. We can create 'chocolate bars' and work out how many whole we had and the remaining fraction. EG if our answer was 33/5 then we would continue to make chocolate bars for 33 5ths which would create 6 full bars and one bar with 3. Therefore our answer is 6 and 3/5

Another way to do it if we have a good conceptual understanding of fractions is to simply divide the numerator by the denominator - 33 divided by 5 = 6 and 3 left over meaning 6 3/5

There you have it. You can now find the area of a rectangle with mixed numbers.
