100 More LCA Tejas Mark 1A
The 23rd August maiden trial of Astra missile from LCA Tejas has been significant achievement in the LCA Tejas program. On the same day the Chief of Air Staff (CAS) Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari has reviewed the status of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme in Air Headquarters along with officials from Ministry of Defence, DRDO, HAL and ADA.
We have reported regarding this in our earlier video. However, there are few more updates coming out of this meeting. As per ANI report the Indian Air Force has plans to order 100 more LCA Tejas Mark1A fighter jet. Earlier, it was reported that the 50 additional orders of 50 LCA Tejas Mark1A will be placed. The addition of 100 more LCA Tejas Mark1A will take its count to total 183 LCA Tejas Mark1A aircraft. This will not only boost the IAF declining squadron strength quickly but also decrease the per unit cost LCA Tejas Mark1A due to bulk order. The proposal for the same has been placed before the ministry of defence and worth around $8 Billion. The report indicates that the approval for the same will be given soon.
Tejas Mark-1A improvements
This is the most sensible decision taken by Indian Air Force and I am personally thrilled about it. The LCA Tejas Mark1A is best in class in its category with all latest weapons and sensors. You want to know why; Lets discuss them in more detail.
The Tejas Mk1A is going to be an upgraded version of the final operational clearance (FOC) configuration (Mk1) with 80 per cent of the detail components being the same. Tejas MK 1A will have 43 improvements over the Mark-1 version.
At present, the LCA is equipped with 344 systems — 210 are indigenous and 134 are imported, however in Mark-1A the imported systems will be reduced to about 80.
Many LRUs (Line Replaceable Units) will be re-positioned & new LRUs are to be included too, keeping in mind the maintainability easiness. IAF wants airframe panels that can be replaced without taking too much time and these will be supplied to the IAF with quick-release fasteners. The Mk1A’s will be easy to maintain as it will make use of a press-fit mechanism, instead of 24 different physical connectors as is the case with the Mk1 which will reduce maintenance overheads. Tejas Mk1A will have greater use of composites, which will further reduce airframe weight and supersonic drag through the use of more aerodynamic pylons.
EW & Missiles
The major highlights of Mark-1A version is going to be indigenous UTTAM AESA radar, an electronic warfare (EW) suite that includes a jammer, the Combined Interrogator and Transponder (CIT) – an IFF plus system, a digital map generator, indigenous Beyond Visual Range missiles ‘Astra’ and MBDA’s Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM).
The development trials of both Astra mark-1 and ASRAAM is planned to be complete before the delivery of Tejas Mark-1A starts.
Tejas has already been integrated with Israel’s I-Derby ER and Python-5 missiles. I-Derby ER missile is a long-range air-to-air missile having an operational range of up to 100 km with a maximum speed of Mach 4 & two-way data link. The Python-5 is the newest member of the Israeli Python family of short-range air-to-air missiles.
