Very few fire watch towers now remain

Fire lookout towers were first used in the early 1900s as a way to detect fire. At their peak, there were around 8,000 towers across the United States 3. Today, there are fewer than 2,000 towers remaining. Many towers have been decommissioned and replaced by newer technology such as drones and cameras.
