STORYLINE:

Police, military and ISAF troops on Saturday conducted rehearsals ahead of the arrival of Afghanistan's exiled former king, Mohammad Zaher Shah in the Afghan capital Kabul.

Armed and uniformed police carried out security drills outside the former monarch's residence, and at Kabul airport where the king is due to arrive on 18 April.

They were joined during the drills by members of the International Security Assistance Force.

The king's house in Kabul has recently undergone extensive renovation work and is now believed to be ready for his arrival.

Zaher Shah, who has lived in exile in Rome since 1973, had been due to return in March, but the trip was delayed because of security fears.
