STORYLINE:
Scores of residents in Gaza City packed up their belongings and left on Sunday after Israel issued new evacuation orders.
A steady stream of men, women and children were seen heading out of the ruined city.
Some pushed elderly or injured relatives in wheelchairs, while others carried young children on their shoulders or lugged bags and jerrycans with them.
Israel continues to battle pockets of militants across the Gaza Strip after months of heavy bombing and ground operations that have devastated the territory's main cities.
Most of the population of 2.3 million people has been displaced, often multiple times.
The Hamas militant group over the weekend appeared to drop its longstanding demand that Israel promise to end the war as part of any cease-fire deal.
Several officials in the Middle East and the U.S. believe the level of devastation in Gaza caused by the nine-month Israeli offensive likely has helped push it to soften its stance.
Israel launched the war in Gaza after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, in which militants stormed into southern Israel, killed some 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and abducted about 250.
Since then, Israeli ground offensives and bombardments have killed more than 38,000 people in Gaza, according to the territory’s Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians in its count.
