Hemorrhoids or piles which are locally called “bawaseer”. They occur in last and second last part of our digestive system means rectum and anus. Sometimes, due to some reasons, pressure exerts on small blood vessels or veins of our rectum and anus cause them to swell, resulting in severe pain in the affected area and bleeding also occurs in some cases. This condition is called piles or hemorrhoids. About 75% of Indian population is affected by hemorrhoids. While exact percentage of so called “bawaseer” is still unknown in Pakistan. Doctors recommend warm bath and high-fiber diet to treat hemorrhoids. While in some cases, hemorrhoids are removed through physical procedures.
Let’s know why and how hemorrhoids form.
Hemorrhoids form due to exertion of pressure on our lower abdominal region specifically rectum and anus. Many of our daily works activities cause exertion of pressure eon our lower abdominal region such as labor work, weightlifting, pregnancy or constipation etc. These works put extra pressure on veins of our rectum and anus region which causes then to swelling, pain and inflammation. These veins accumulate, swell and form an outgrowth or bulge in anus and rectum region, which is called hemorrhoids or piles.
Many people do not have pain or bleeding with hemorrhoids, so no symptoms appear in them. While in some people, hemorrhoids cause severe pain, swelling and inflammation in rectum and anus region and all these result in bleeding.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Hemorrhoids or “bawaseer” is diagnosed through digital rectal exam, anoscopy and sigmoidoscopy. While doctors recommend Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs means NSAIDS and high-fiber diet along with warm bath. However, completely removing hemorrhoids in severe cases involves performing treatments such as rubber band ligation, electrocoagulation, infrared coagulation and sclerotherapy etc.
In rubber band ligation, rubber band is placed around hemorrhoids to remove them, while in electrocoagulation and infrared coagulation, heart is used through electric current or infrared probe to remove hemorrhoids. Similarly, in sclerotherapy, a specific chemical in injected into hemorrhoids to destroy them.
Besides, large hemorrhoids are removed through surgical procedure called hemorrhoidectomy.
