I went on a day hike in the Cohutta Wilderness beginning at the Tearbritches Trailhead. Just a walk with the LORD out in HIS creation. This trail is better suited for a winter hike as the views are much more clear. I wanted to do this trail because I have never hiked it during the summer season. It is cool to hike trails during different seasons as it seems like it is a totally different trail with new sights and sounds. Tearbritches is aptly named as it is covered in briars and thorns as well as being very steep. I believe it was worse this year because of the wildfires a couple of years ago as well as major storms that left many blowdowns along the trail. The undergrowth exploded as it gained access to the sunshine.

I made my way down into the Conasauga River Valley and Bray Field where I connected with the Conasauga River Trail. Then headed upriver along the Conasauga River Trail exploring the area as I hiked. I rested and had a peaceful lunch while listening to the flow of the river. After some time exploring I returned to the Tearbritches Trail and made my way back to the trailhead. The climb out of the Conasauga River Valley is a fairly tough ascent. The Conasauga River is at an elevation near 1700 feet and the Tearbritches Trail takes one over the summit of Bald Mountain at just over 4000 feet. Oh yeah, no switchbacks! Laughing! I would not suggest this trail as family friendly especially during the summer. Children will most likely not enjoy the briar and thorn covered trail. I recommend this trail only for seasoned backpackers and hikers.

Thank you for hiking with Sleeves! Keep Hiking!
