John the Ripper (JTR) is a free, open-source software tool used by hackers, both ethical and otherwise, for password cracking.
It is one of the most popular password cracking programs out there.

(JtR) was produced for UNIX-based systems. It was designed to test password strength, brute-force encrypted (hashed) passwords, and crack passwords via dictionary attacks.

This particular video is just to showcase the basic methodology of how to complete a password recovery. For pentesting a large company, this would be a great deal more complex. 😃

00:00 - John the Ripper introduction.
00:10 - Where is JtR in Kali Linux.
00:24 - We require 2 file, passwd and shadow.
00:57 - Create the 'passwd' and 'shadow' files using the NANO editor.
02:24 - Use the unshadow command to merge the passwd and shadow files into one separate unshadow.txt file.
02:48 - Password list location.
03:18 - Use JOHN to now crack the password. --format=crypt

This is a very popular and useful technique to assist in the pen testing process. This is a basic video, but does show the process of how to recover passwords, or at the least encourage users to use a password manager or much harder to crack passwords.
