The construction of Luxor Temple began around 1400 BCE, during the reign of Amenhotep III. The pharaoh built a grand entrance or pylon at the front of the temple, which featured colossal statues of himself, depicting him as a divine ruler. The pylon was adorned with intricate carvings and hieroglyphs that celebrated the pharaoh's achievements and highlighted his divine connections.
During the reign of Tutankhamun, the temple underwent further construction and renovation. The young pharaoh added additional structures, including a courtyard and an avenue of sphinxes that connected Luxor Temple with the nearby Karnak Temple, located approximately three kilometers to the north.
Ramses II, one of the most powerful pharaohs of ancient Egypt, also left his mark on Luxor Temple. He added a large colonnade and a massive seated statue of himself at the entrance. The colonnade is known as the Great Court of Ramses II and features colossal statues of the pharaoh and depictions of his military victories.
Over time, Luxor Temple fell into disrepair and was largely buried beneath desert sands. It was rediscovered and excavated by European archaeologists in the 19th century, revealing its grandeur and historical significance.
