Stereotactic Body Radiosurgery is a well-established, non-invasive treatment for prostate cancer, performed in five separate treatment fractions. This “knifeless” surgery uses a linear accelerator with precision photon radiation beam shaping capability. The linear accelerator does not touch you, but rotates around you, sending radiation to your tumor from many directions. The radiation is delivered to the target with a level of precision that a human hand alone, cannot achieve. Each beam is customized individually allowing for sub-millimeter precision that conforms treatment for tumors of all shapes. Because of the high level of precision, one of the benefits of Stereotactic Body Radiosurgery is that it does not require the placement of a rectal balloon or SpaceOAR gel that is needed with proton therapy. With Stereotactic Body Radiosurgery no incision is made and the treatment is virtually painless during and after the procedure. Patients recover much faster than with conventional surgery and the absence of an incision eliminates the risk of bleeding and infection.
