Here's a close-up look at today's efforts to avoid flooding in Sacramento and West Sacramento and downstream. The Dept. of Water Resources opened more flood gates at the Sacramento Weir just behind the CHP Academy on Wednesday morning. If you've wondered how they do this, you'll see it in action here.  Special thanks to Phil Carey, Mike Salvador, Brandon Hill, Rand Wilcox and Mat Goodman, all DWR employees, who let us tag along and see just what it takes to open these manual gates.

The 1,920-foot-long Sacramento Weir consists of 48 gates that must be opened with a long hooked pole. The gates are opened when the river level at the I Street Bridge reaches 29.87 feet. The weir, built in 1916, was last opened in December 2005.
