Note: This video is meant to be watched at 60 frames per second due to the flickering used to display the text on screen, so ensure you've got your playback set to 720p60fps. This is very much a cartridge designed for a CRT and the graphical techniques here lose a lot of their luster with modern displays. For the 50th video in the Atari Archive series, we look at the incredibly rich history behind Sears' Stellar Track, one of countless variations of Mike Mayfield's 1971 Star Trek computer game. Based on the American TV series, Star Trek was one of the most widespread computer games ever published. It pioneered random elements of what we now call Roguelikes as players explore the galaxy, fighting Klingons. The VCS conversion, written by Rob Zdybel, successfully brings this text-heavy game to a platform poorly suited for it. Learn how this conversion was done, why it's often overlooked today, and the powerful influence that Star Trek (the game) has been for years after it was originally written. Special thanks to Mike Mayfield, Bob Leedom, Rob Zdybel and David Ahl for sharing their insights and memories, to Brian Clark for his translation, Ethan Johnson and Pete Turnbull for their extant research, and Marcel van Tongeren for helping revive the COSMAC VIP Galaxy Patrol game.
