A nightstick fracture is a fracture resulting from a direct blow to the ulnar shaft.
The ulna is superficial and lies subcutaneously under the skin.
This injury is caused when the victim raises the arm to protect against assault to the head.
Clinical presentation: Localized swelling and pain.
Minimally displaced fracture:
- Treatment varies from use of ace bandage to the plaster immobilization or functional brace.
Displaced fracture:
- Displaced more than 50% or angulation more than 10° are treated by surgery usually involving plate fixation.
