Bernard Lonergan was born in 1904. At seventeen, he began his novitiate in the Society of Jesus. He taught classical and modern languages, mathematics and mechanics, but did not neglect to broaden his philosophical and theological knowledge. He studied at the Gregorian in Rome. In 1936 he was ordained a priest. From 1940 he undertook the academic teaching of dogmatic theology. He was among the experts of the Second Vatican Council. He died in 1984.

His two major works: ‘Insight’ dated 1957 and Method in Theology dated 1972.

His doctoral thesis at the Gregorian on the theory of Grace and human freedom in the thought of St Thomas transformed him from a researcher into a disciple of Aquinas. He took an original path in the study of St. Thomas by starting not with the metaphysical structure but with the psychological content of the Thomist theory of the intellect.

The tenacity with which Bernard Lonergan cultivated his focus on history was rewarded by the Second Vatican Council.
