52 : Protocol Convergence - Fundament... The word Megaco is an abbreviation for Media Gateway Controller, and it is also known by the name H.248. You may hear the standard referred to by either name. The Megaco standard is used by media gateways to provide a seamless link between the circuit-switched public telephone system and packet-based IP networks. Remember, a gateway is a point on a network that provides an entrance to a different type of network. A media gateway is like a translator who helps two people who speak different languages hold a conversation. These media gateways will, for example, allow a caller from a normal telephone to make calls over the Internet.

Megaco provides the gateway-to-gateway interface for SIP. Using SIP and Megaco together allows media like fax, video, and data to flow from the public telephone network to IP networks, and vice versa.

Multiple media gateways are governed by one media gateway controller, so intelligence is centrally located, which makes it easier to implement Megaco in an existing network. Media gateways using Megaco are fairly low in cost and integrate with existing technology in the telephone networks, making their implementation fast and cost-effective.
