52 : Protocol Convergence - Fundament...

There are far too many protocols associated with convergence to cover all of them here, but two emerging protocols you should be aware of are the IEEE 802.3af standard and the ENUM standard.

The IEEE 802.3af standard will govern how power is supplied to IP phones. As I mentioned a while ago, IP phones must have a new type of power supply in order to work. Traditional phones are powered by the PBX, so IP phones must get power from somewhere else. Some IP phones are designed to plug into the wall socket. This doesn't seem like a great solution, because now you have two connections for every phone: a network connection and a power connection. The other option is to power IP phones over the existing Ethernet cable. This the method that seems most likely to work, since one cable can be used for both connections. So, the IEEE standards committee created 802.3af to define a standard way of powering IP phones from Ethernet switches.

Another important standard is ENUM, which stands for e-Number. ENUM is designed to assist in mapping addresses to phone numbers. Just like a DNS server maps an IP address to domain name, the ENUM specification will map phone numbers to URL addresses. Using ENUM, you don't need to remember a bunch of phone numbers, and you don't need to remember a bunch of IP addresses. You just need to remember who you are calling.

Using ENUM, you enter an address like "Bob's_phone," and the phone system consults a database to locate the device you are trying to contact. This may sound like something that some phones already do, but ENUM is different from phones that simply allow you to dial by name within an organization. The capability available today is just a basic look-up table located within specific phones. ENUM will extend this capability across the complete phone network, similar to the process DNS servers use.

The protocols we talked about today are only a few of the more well-known convergence-related specifications - keep an eye out for others. And remember, when you're thinking about convergence protocols, one of the most important things to remember is that they are standards-based.

Interoperability is one of the keys to convergence, and standards-based protocols are a must.
