Kurt Roger was born in Vienna, studied at Vienna university with Karl Weigl and Arnold Schoenberg. He received his doctoral degree in 1918 and taught at the Vienna conservatory until 1938, when he immigrated to the US. He lived and worked in NYC and Washington DC. He died in 1966 on a visit to Vienna.

I was introduced to his music by his widow, Joy Roger-Hammerschlag, who was a professional violist. At the time she lived in Belfast. There is a very good viola sonata dedicated to her by Roger. I know that the music is now available in print. When I learnt the sonata, there was only a handwritten copy, very nicely done, by the composer.

Recorded from a concert, Jan. 1996
