Have You Ever Seen This?  Unique & Unusual Way To Ship Truck Trailers!  This Is The Norfolk Southern Triple Crown Road Railer Train On Its Only Route.  The train hits the railroad diamond with so many trailers that I lost count.  Includes a BIG Norfolk Southern train with a DPU in the middle and scores of Grand Trunk Western boxcars.  These trains are in Logansport and Peru, Indiana.  I filmed both sides of the Triple Crown train by chasing it to Peru to catch it again after a crew change.  I rode up to Logansport, Indiana with Scott, @1960gambit.  We met up with The Railroad Tie Spiker.  He gave us some great information on railfanning the area and catching the Road Railer.   I have had it on my list for a few years since reading an article about it in Trains Magazine.  At the time, the article said that this would be the last route for it and the boggies/trucks would be eliminated as they become due for heavy maintenance.  It is rumoured that July might be the last month for them so we decided to get up here right now.  By the time you read this I will be in Cass, West Virginia.  When I get time I will be posting a Part 2 for my visit to Logansport.  It will feature the Toledo, Peoria & Western Railroad doing a little switching and crossing the diamond in Logansport.  The best frequencies for this area are 161.400 for the TP&W and 160.860 for Norfolk Southern.
We got here just before noon.  Scott was driving and as we arrived there was a TP&W train doing some switching in the yard next to the diamond in downtown Logansport.  I will have that train and a couple of more Norfolk Southern trains in that video.  This video starts with the first Norfolk Southern train that we caught.  This train was a monster with a mid train DPU.  Look how huge the auto parts boxcars are!  I have never seen that many Grand Trunk Western boxcars in my life.  There were also some Conrail boxcars in there.  The train included auto racks and flat cars with stacks of truck frames.
The next train is the eastbound Triple Crown Road Railer.  The road railer runs one in each direction every day.  We missed the westbound Road Railer by a couple of hours.  This is the train that we came here for.  We were hoping to catch it on its evening trip to Detroit.  The train only runs between Kansas City and Detroit.  It used to run on other NS lines but all the routes except this one were eliminated about 7 years or so ago.  I actually have a video of a Road Railer in Walton, Kentucky that I filmed in 2015.  We were told by several railfans that the Road Railer could possibly cease in July of this year so we hurried on over here.  There is also talk of obtaining some new boggies to keep it in operation but who knows what will happen.  It is such a rare and unique train that I just had to film it.  Crossing over the railroad diamond with the TP&W was possibly the coolest place to see it.
After it passed we decided to go to Peru to catch it a second time.  Peru was a little over 20 miles to the east and they had to do a crew change there.  The train actually beat us there but we had plenty of time to figure out how to film it as the crews were changing.  I was able to film the other side of the train this time so this video shows both sides of it.  Notice how lucky we were that it was being led by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe locomotive!  The other train in this video was pretty awesome also.  What do you think about the Triple Crown train?  Have you ever seen it before and can you tell me anything about it that might be of interest?  This was an epic trip that I plan on repeating soon.  I am told that there are some other great spots in the area that I need to see.
Look for my second video from Logansport to be posted soon.  I don't know when that will be because I will be in West Virginia this week and Pennsylvania next week but I plan on being home for a couple of days in between.  After that I will be off to Tennessee and I might run into Shoestring again.
