Tailor Your ENTIRE Closet
Got a blazer that you want to fit you better, but you don't want to pay a tailor? Yeah, let's make it happen! It's beginner friendly, and best of all, I don't like long intros, so let's do this.
Lay your jacket down, smooth it out, and let's talk about our plan of attack. It's these two side seams right here that we're gonna alter. And if you want to alter the center seam as well, you can, but there's no need on this jacket because it fits the middle of my back just fine. Some jackets have multiple additional seams on the side and front, but altering these is unnecessary. But if you want to, go right ahead.
Let's flip our jacket inside out. If there was lining, just cut a hole in the bottom, flip your jacket through that hole, and handle your business. Easy peasy. Grab this side seam first and flip it on its side. We're going to put a double-sided tapered straight stitch on the seam, meaning it will gradually go in and then out.
We'll put two sewing pins 4 inches from the edge of our seams. The space between those two pins is 9 inches, with the widest part of my dart right in the middle at 5 1/2 inches. For a nice gradual taper, place the bottom pin at a quarter of an inch, the middle pin at 1 inch, and the top pin at a quarter of an inch again. Repeat for the other side seam.
These are our pinned-up side seams. If yours look like mine, perfect. The vertical green pin at the bottom is where we'll start our stitch. Follow along that gradual taper. If you've never used a sewing machine before, don't panic. It's just a straight stitch.
Set your straight stitch at 2.5 millimeters in length. Line up your machine under that first vertical pin and go slow. Here's the inside of our jacket with a nice gradual taper. I used contrasting thread so you could see what I'm doing.
No need to cut anything. This is the outside, and no one will know you just spent 20 minutes doing this yourself!
