Ignatius of Loyola is most known for the creation of The Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuit Order. His life made a dramatic change after a near-deadly encounter with a cannonball. After being exposed to Christ and the Saints, he dedicated his life to following Christ. In that pursuit, he would lay the foundations for the Society of Jesus to spread around the globe.

Ignatius of Loyola, born Iñigo López de Oñaz y Loyola in 1491, came from a noble family. He initially pursued a life of upper-class indulgence but was inspired by tales of chivalry and later joined the military at 17. Despite his violent tendencies, he served under the Duke of Najera, excelling in diplomatic and leadership roles.
In 1521, Ignatius suffered a debilitating leg injury at the Battle of Pamplona, ending his military career. During his recovery, he underwent a spiritual transformation influenced by Christian literature and a vision of the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus. He decided to pursue a monastic life, giving up his wealth and belongings.
After settling in Manresa, he practiced asceticism and made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, which eventually led him back to Barcelona to focus on education. Ignatius encountered the Inquisition and explored mysticism within Catholicism during his studies.
In France, he formed close bonds with six companions, including Francis Xavier, Peter Faber, and others. Together, they founded the Society of Jesus in 1539, emphasizing chastity, poverty, and obedience to the Pope.
Ignatius wrote influential works like "Spiritual Exercises" and "Constitutions," promoting individual spiritual and theological development for all Christians. Their motto, "Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam," emphasized seeking God's glory in everyday life.
The Jesuits rapidly expanded, establishing schools, sending missionaries worldwide, and countering Protestantism. Ignatius became the first Superior General, and the Society grew exponentially during his leadership.
Ignatius fell ill in 1556 and passed away on July 31, leaving behind a legacy of a thriving Jesuit order.
