Anthony of Egypt or Anthony the Great is one of the most influential men in the development of the desert monastic life. His life was chronicled by Athanasius of Alexandria, who wrote "The Life of St. Anthony," in which he told the life story of Anthony and how his life impacted the development of Christian thought and practice.

Anthony was born to upper-middle-class Christians in the area of Lower Egypt. He was an obedient child who was not interested in school but did not make trouble for his parents. Around the age of 18 or 20, both of his parents passed away. This left him in charge of his family's estate as well as his unmarried sisters future.

Six months after his parents passed, his life would forever be changed when he was first called to a new lifestyle by hearing Matthew 19:21. After hearing this, he was called to sell the 300 acres of land, anything in the house that would fit out the front door, and all the profit he made he gave away to the poor, only keeping a small amount for the sake of his sister.

But he had a second calling from the Lord not to be anxious about tomorrow. With this, he decided to call it all quits and sell absolutely everything and entrusted his sister to a convent of Christian virgins who welcomed her into their group.

This would forever change the trajectory of Anthony's' life. He would start a path to learning how to create a lifestyle of true discipline as a Christ follower. He started by learning from several hermits who were around his home city. He took bits of everything he learned and began to create a new way of living. His next big move would be to go into the Mountains and attempt to live in absolute solitude.

This didn't last long, as a small community developed around his mountain solitude. After several years he finally relented and exited his absolute solitude and began to form a small community around his teachings. He developed what would become traditional ideas in monastic teachings. He preached to give up all worldly possessions; he contextualized the beauty that awaits the faithful to God in the afterlife as greater than any worldly passions and assured them that being strong in their faith made them stronger than demons and their attacks on them.

He also spoke very strongly against the idea of Arianism. He spoke in support of the idea of Jesus being fully God and fully man all throughout his life. This is one reason that Athanasius and Anthony got along so well. This is also why Athanasius called on Anthony later in his life to come to Alexandria to speak against Arianism.

The final days of Anthony's life is quite an interesting end. Anthony called his closest followers together to prepare for his final days. He explained that he did not want to be mummified or put on display, as was the practice for some in the area. He wanted to be buried and left in the ground like the previous saints. He requested his followers bury him in an unmarked area on top of the mountain.

However, this did not last long. Sometime after his burial, he was dug up and put on display in Alexandria, contrary to his literal dying wish. He was then shipped around on display to several areas before finally ending up in a Church dedicated to Anthony known as Saint Antonie I Abbay.
